DIY Retailing - The Netherlands - January 2006

Mintel estimates that the Dutch market for DIY goods was worth in the region of €10 billion in 2004. Given that the country’s retail sales fell by 1.9% in 2004 and DIY specialists’ sales dipped by as much as 3.4%, our estimated market value assumes a small dip in DIY spending too that year

However DIY specialists have been one of the better-performing segments of the Dutch retail industry in recent years. Between 2000-2004 the sector gained 1.2 percentage points of market share in non-food retailing and, by 2004, sector sales were in the region of €5.2 billion. A number of factors contributed to the outperformance, including a steadily increasing level of home ownership, rising house prices, and an above average increase in DIY enterprise and store numbers relative to all retailing.
