Nevertheless, Mintel's 2000 report concluded that the then total number of titles and market size in volume terms was probably sustainable given the degree of publisher innovation in evidence that had attracted new readers to the market segment.

However, since 2000 there has been a significant volume contraction within this market, confounding all the more optimistic predictions, and this report sets out to investigate the key reasons for this contraction and the best prospects for growth over the near future.
