The report assesses the proposition that: "Leisure facilities can be used to create diversity in shopping trips and mean that more people will spend more time and spend more money at destinations with leisure facilities if leisure provision meets their needs."

The report is focused around four specially commissioned consumer research questions. The type of location envisaged was characterised to respondents in the following preamble:

"Thinking about making a trip to a location for shopping such as a shopping centre which has a large number of shops together with some type of leisure facilities eg a cinema, tenpin bowling alley, supervised children's area etc, either under the same roof or nearby eg Bluewater, which, if any, of the following statements regarding these shopping centres with leisure facilities applies to you?"

This question was supported with three related questions designed to gauge usage of and attitudes towards destinations of the type outlined above. Mintel acknowledges that not all respondents may have such a destination within their immediate vicinity but believes that most consumers have an awareness and understanding of the type of destination described.
