Retail sales of alcohol in Ireland in 2003 reached €7 billion, with 76.3% of total sales coming from on-trade sales in pubs and clubs and 23.7% from the off-trade. Despite recent tax increases in RoI, the Irish alcohol market has enjoyed strong growth above inflation for the period and reached a value of €5.6 billion in 2003, increasing by 39.6% between 1998 to 2003. However, the NI market has reached a value of £944.6 million, having increased by only 6.4% from 1998, with alcohol consumption decreasing in many categories.

What effect will the controversial smoking ban in RoI have on the on- and off-trade markets?

What effect will the maturing population (who tend to consume less alcohol) have on sales?
