Mintel examines the snowsports market every two years. The previous report, Snowsports, Leisure Intelligence, was published in August 1998.

Originally, the report was entitled Skiing, but the new title from 1998 reflects the growing importance of snowboarding as an alternative pursuit, even on what are still called 'skiing holidays'. These holidays are offering a wider and more sophisticated range of options every year, and part of the consumer survey conducted exclusively for this report will quantify the demand for these options and extras to the basic skiing package.

Improvements and upgradings to the basic snowsports package are necessary, because the overall demand for these holidays is still restricted to a small minority of the population, despite the high profile of Alpine skiing in the media and its glamorous image. Those who do ski regularly are usually in the 'affluent and adventurous' category of holidaymaker, and operators are in a position to encourage a higher per capita spend on snowsports, even if they cannot broaden their market significantly.
